Celebrating over 20 years of BJJ in NSW
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) originated in the early 20th century when Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo were introduced to Brazil. The Gracie family refined and adapted these techniques, creating a system focused on leverage and ground control, which later became known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ for short. The art gained international recognition through the success of BJJ practitioners in mixed martial arts (MMA) and grappling competitions.
In New South Wales, BJJ has been growing for over two decades, with the NSW BJJ Federation (NSWBJJF) playing a key role in its development since 2001. What started as a niche martial art with a handful of practitioners has evolved into a thriving community with numerous academies and a strong competition scene. Today, thousands of athletes of all ages and skill levels train and compete across the state, making BJJ one of the fastest-growing combat sports in Australia.
