NSWBJJF Code of Conduct

The NSW BJJ Federation (NSWBJJF) is committed to ensuring that all competitions are conducted in a safe, respectful, and fair environment. This Code of Conduct applies to all participants, coaches, referees, parents, guardians, supporters, and spectators at NSWBJJF events. By participating in NSWBJJF competitions, all attendees agree to abide by this Code of Conduct. Failure to comply may result in disqualification, event bans, police involvement, or further disciplinary action.

General Behaviour

  • All participants and attendees must behave in a respectful and sportsmanlike manner at all times.
  • Yelling, swearing, or abusive language towards competitors, referees, officials, or other attendees is strictly prohibited.
  • Violence, threats, harassment, or intimidation of any kind, including verbal, physical, or emotional abuse, is strictly prohibited. Threats such as “break their arm,” “hurt them,” or “make them suffer” are not tolerated.
  • Acts involving gang violence, intimidation, or criminal behaviour will not be tolerated.
  • Police and/or security may be called if behaviour breaches the law or becomes threatening, harassing, or violent, or if there are credible threats of future violence.
  • All attendees must follow the instructions of referees, officials, and event staff at all times.

Competitor and Supporter Responsibilities

  • Competitors, their families, guardians, and supporters are expected to promote a safe and respectful environment.
  • Any interference, verbal abuse, or threatening behaviour directed at referees, officials, or opponents is strictly prohibited.
  • Parents, guardians, or supporters who breach this Code of Conduct may face immediate consequences, including disqualification of the competitor they are supporting.

Disciplinary Measures

  • If a referee determines that a parent, guardian, supporter, or team member is in breach of this Code of Conduct, the bout may be stopped immediately, and the competitor associated with the offending party will be disqualified. The match will then be awarded to the opponent.
  • In instances where both competitors’ supporters are in breach, both competitors may be disqualified.
  • The NSWBJJF reserves the right to ban any participant, family member, guardian, supporter, or team from current or future events for acts of violence, threats, or behaviour that jeopardises the safety and wellbeing of others.

Dress Code and Safety Requirements

  • Competitors must wear a clean team gi for all competitions.
  • Fingernails and toenails must be short and trimmed to prevent injury.
  • Jewellery is strictly prohibited, including rings, earrings, necklaces, watches, and piercings.
  • Hair should be tied back or secured to prevent interference or injury.
  • All equipment and attire must comply with IBJJF and NSWBJJF rules to ensure competitor safety.

Safety and Respect

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a competitive sport, but all attendees have the right to feel safe and secure at competitions.
  • The NSWBJJF is committed to a culture where fair play, respect, and personal safety are paramount.
