IBJJF Competition Points
The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) follows a structured point system to reward technical dominance and positional control during matches. Points are awarded for achieving and maintaining dominant positions, encouraging positional advancement and control. All of our referees as NSWBJJF Competitions are certified referees under the IBJJF.
Winning Criteria
- Highest points at the end of the match.
- Advantages if points are tied.
- Referee decision if points and advantages are equal.
- Submission (automatic win).

Advantage Points
- Awarded for actions that are nearly completed but they are not held for 3 seconds. For example, this may include near-submissions, near sweeps, near mounts, and near guard passes where an athlete makes significant progress but does not fully secure the position.
- Advantages break ties when competitors have equal points.
Penalties and Deductions
- Stalling (lack of activity): First warning, followed by penalties.
- Illegal moves: Vary by belt level and age; some result in immediate disqualification.
- Accumulated penalties: Can lead to disqualification
