Welcome to The NSW BJJ Federation
The New South Wales Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (NSW BJJ) Federation was founded in 2001 by three Brazilian black belts: Professor Paulo Guimarães, Professor Marcelo Rezende, and Professor Bruno Panno. At the time, there was no official competition circuit in NSW, and they recognised the need to establish structured events to help grow the sport across Australia. Their goal was to create a professional competition environment that adhered to the official rules set by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), ensuring a high standard for athletes and coaches alike.
Over the past two decades, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has experienced remarkable growth in New South Wales, with an increasing number of practitioners in both the kids' and adult divisions. Today, the NSW BJJ Federation oversees a packed competition calendar, hosting multiple state championships, regional tournaments, and IBJJF-affiliated events. These competitions attract thousands of competitors annually, ranging from white belts stepping onto the mats for the first time to seasoned black belts competing at an elite level. The sport’s rise in popularity has also led to a surge in BJJ academies across the state, providing structured training for athletes of all ages and skill levels.
